Unexpected surprises
When I was five years old, I got into some big time trouble with my parents. I don’t recall what I did, but I remember they threatened to not pay for college (it was always assumed I’d attend). I started crying hysterically. My tears had little to do with the actual expense of school. I concluded that since my parents met each other at the university, I’d meet my better half there too…Years have passed since my graduation; I’ve moved on to plan B.
Every once in awhile I hear about women that plot to find their husbands in 90 days! They quit their jobs and ride the elevators in hospitals all day long in hopes of catching a cute doctor. Or they time their grocery shopping to maximize potential success. This is NOT my plan B β slap me before I become that woman. Life happens when you least expect it; some of the most memorable times I’ve been asked out on a date have been completely by surprise…
I was known to sleep through art history courses in college. It’s difficult to fight the sleep fairy in the midst of a food coma after lunch, especially when the lights dim to accommodate the upcoming slide show extravaganza. I purposely positioned myself fourth row from the back in the middle of class while trying to bury myself among the crowd. Some girls can pull off falling asleep looking as cute as a button β I am not one of those girls. I usually opted to pull my knees up tightly against my chest while letting my head fall back against the seat rim; mouth hanging wide open. What can I say? It was comfortable. The only way it could have been more unsexy is if I started drooling. However, somewhere mid-semester a painter boy chatted me up, “Hey, I’ve noticed you in class…” Surely he had the wrong girl. How could someone notice me sleeping?!? Did I snore?!? I appreciated his attempt and gave him my number anyway.
Another memorable moment was during a visit to the campus’ student health center. It was that time of year for my checkup with the lady doctor to make sure all my parts were running smoothly. I walked in towards the information desk to schedule an appointment. Smiling behind the counter was a cute boy with indie inspired black rimmed glasses. He jokingly asked if we’ve met before because I looked strangely familiar. It was kinda cheesy, but sometimes I like extra cheese on my pizza. Mostly, I was impressed that he had the cojones to ask for a date in an extremely awkward situation.
So, what is my plan B? It’s to take each day as it comes. Be open to new possibilities. And to all the boys out there…I like surprises. ![]()
Ah Art History class. When the lights were off I was out like a log. I scheduled those classes purposely after lunch so I could get a siesta.
